Jackson Yang | Chief Language & Culture Officer

We are so excited to welcome everyone back to the 2026–2027 school year at HOPE! Our team is committed to growing our bilingual academics in Hmong/English and Karen/English, and we are thrilled to introduce our K-5 Hmong Performing Arts class along with Hmong I and Hmong II. This year, we are expanding cultural enrichment opportunities for students, including continuing our Hmong Dance team, Kaj Cia Siab, learning the qeej Hmong instrument, and weaving stories through paj ntaub. Please take a moment to read below to learn a brief overview of our beliefs, goals, and staff for this school year. We look forward to partnering with you to build a school year filled with growth, belonging, and strong community relationships.

Mission Statement:
Our mission is to preserve, teach, and celebrate the Hmong and Karen language and culture.

Vision Statement:
Our vision is for every HOPE student to achieve Hmong or Karen proficiency and cultural competence, communicate effectively for school and beyond, and lead positive change in their communities.

What is a Bilingual Program?

A bilingual program focuses on instruction in two languages. In the HOPE Bilingual Program, the Hmong language and culture is embraced as the central focus of instruction while including the Karen language and culture.

Where we are at:

Our K-9 students receive instruction in two sets of language combinations: Hmong/English or Karen/English. In 9th grade, Hmong I and Hmong II focus on building students’ identity through the Hmong language. In all classrooms, students work toward proficiency in one set of language while learning about the target culture, language, and identity.

Program Goals:

Goal One

By the end of SY 2028, HOPE will bring rigor to the bilingual program.

Goal Two

By 2028, HOPE will have executed four cultural enrichment in-school and after-school programs highlighting the Hmong culture.

Goal Three

HOPE will display the Hmong and Karen culture throughout the school building by 2028.
